Message from the Governor General of Canada
on World Refugee Day
OTTAWA—Canadians claim more than 200 ethnic origins and speak more than 200 languages. This diversity is our strength as a country, a fact understood by Canadians.
When faced with the refugee crisis, we responded with compassion and generosity. That outpouring of solidarity speaks volumes about the values we hold most dear. Our commitment to diversity, inclusiveness and tolerance is not only making a tangible difference in the lives of refugees, it is also rekindling hope in the millions of victims of violence and intolerance around the world.
Over the course of my mandate as governor general, I have seen the extent to which help and support are truly lifelines when extended to refugees fleeing war, barbarism and oppression. I am proud of our unwavering determination and extraordinary ability to help those in need.
World Refugee Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the strength, courage and perseverance of refugees. I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding work being done by volunteers and all those who have reached out and opened their hearts to ease the suffering of others.
