What a magnificent gathering of artists and artistic supporters! No matter what you bring to the arts, each of you has a deep understanding of their importance to our national identity.
I’ve already seen some amazing pieces of art and fantastic performances here today. And I’m very well aware that these works were made possible by the talent of the artists themselves and the dedication of all those who champion the arts.
The Gardiner Museum and Canada’s National Ballet School are committed to showcasing and supporting ceramic artists and dancers.
And today, we welcome new givers to the arts community with the launch of the Gardiner’s Young Patrons Circle, as well as the Ballet School’s First Position Patrons.
I thank you for being part of such a generous group.
Your efforts give more Canadians the chance to live their dream, to make art.
Creativity needs the proper environment to flourish. You are building that environment by giving back, by providing a space for artists to share their creations.
And while art itself may be done in isolation, the finished work can be a collaborative approach between artist and audience. The journey from conception to creation will also find organizations like yours. Organizations that educate, inspire and nurture artists; that encourage new generations of philanthropists who will support artists in their works.
Never underestimate the impact you have. You’re an essential part of our cultural community.
And you’re an essential part of a smarter, more caring community as well.
I’ve seen first-hand what art can do for our well-being, particularly for our mental health. My wife, Sharon, and I have experienced how dance or sculpture or any other art form encourages expression and healing.
The support you give is inspirational to so many others.
That’s why I’m proud to be here today to say bravo to all of you, especially the emerging and engaged young leaders in the arts and philanthropic communities. You’re nurturing change and are doing so through your giving.
I wish all of you the very best as you continue your mission to bring the arts to Canadians and to urge more Canadians to create art.
Thank you.
