Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of the One-Year Anniversary of the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

OTTAWA— One year ago, on March 11, a deadly earthquake and tsunami ravaged the country of Japan. In the aftermath of this catastrophic event, and despite the overwhelming loss of life they faced, the Japanese people banded together to rebuild. Some sacrificed their own safety and health to protect both neighbours and strangers hardest hit by this disaster. Others tackled the arduous, daunting challenge of reconstructing communities. All of them are to be lauded for their tremendous resilience and courage.

On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my renewed condolences on all that has been lost, and my hopes for a brighter future for Japan.

David Johnston
