Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of the
Journée internationale de la Francophonie
Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of the
OTTAWA— I am delighted to join with all Canadians, as well as with Francophones the world over, in celebrating the Journée internationale de la Francophonie, the theme of which this year is “Le français est une chance” [French is an opportunity].
As I have travelled across this vast country, I have had the pleasure of witnessing how dynamic and vibrant Canada’s French-speaking communities are. The members of these communities share a remarkable warmth and the desire to build a smarter, more caring society.
The impact of the great celebration taking place March 20 extends well beyond the bounds of the Francophone world. Indeed, the International Organisation of La Francophonie is working to promote peace, democracy and respect for human rights. The events organized by its members are faithfully held under the banner of values that we all hold dear.
This is why today is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together, to celebrate the French fact, to intensify the dialogue of cultures and to strengthen solidarity within our rich diversity. I wish everyone an enjoyable Journée internationale de la Francophonie.
David Johnston
