Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of Human Rights Day
OTTAWA— From its early-modern roots to its current form, the idea of natural, inalienable human rights has come a long way. Today, we remember our history, we remember what has come before, and we are thankful for the freedom in which we live.
Yet we should not forget that millions of people still, to this very day, struggle to achieve even basic human rights. We have seen throughout history regimes collapsing and new, democratic societies arising in their wake. However, the truest hallmark of progress and enlightenment is the process whereby basic human rights are enshrined in law, and enforced by the judiciary.
I believe that it is essential to remember that in Canada, we have rights because throughout history we have clamored for them—a popular refrain demanding freedom and dignity for all. And as we celebrate International Human Rights Day this year, I look forward to even more voices joining the chorus around the world.
David Johnston
