Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada on the Occasion of Holocaust Memorial Day

OTTAWA— Every year, we hear: six million dead. And every year, we answer: never again.

Many years ago, survivors from the Holocaust began to tell their stories. At first hesitant to relive the horrors they experienced, they became more outspoken as time went by. Listening to those stories, we are still shocked by the evil that existed and distressed by what they had to endure.

But these stories reveal something else. They show us the tenacity, bravery and ingenuity of those who escaped, the sheer will to live and the hope that was never fully lost. We are told fascinating stories of resisting the enemy. We hear of the great resolve of people who held onto their identity and beliefs, despite the danger.

As we mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Yom HaShoah, let us remember those who were taken from us, but let us also be inspired by the stories that show us that no matter what evil we face, humanity will persevere and good will triumph.

David Johnston
