Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of Black History Month

OTTAWA—I am delighted to extend greetings to all Canadians on the occasion of Black History Month.

Since 1995, Canada has marked this month by celebrating the invaluable contributions made by members of the Black community. It is a time of insight and inspiration, as we collectively examine our past and work towards a better future for the next generation.

This year’s theme, Our Canadian Story: Making Community Engagement a Priority, is one that is near and dear to me. As governor general, I strongly believe in the importance of philanthropy and volunteerism. When we give, the benefits are twofold: not only do we help another person or charity, but we also nourish a fundamental need within ourselves.

Every day, in neighbourhoods across the country, African-Canadians are making extraordinary efforts to help those in need. Teaching, mentoring, supporting and listening in myriad ways, they are on the front lines, advocating for change and making a difference in the lives they touch. And not just during one month of the year—every day, every year and everywhere.

David Johnston
