Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of World AIDS Day
I have seen what humanity can accomplish in the pursuit of knowledge, with innovation and determination as our tools. Since HIV/AIDS was first discovered over four decades ago, great strides have been made in terms of research and treatment. There has been a sharp decline in infection rates and in AIDS-related deaths. Almost half of the people with HIV/AIDS now have access to antiretroviral medicine.
But there is still suffering. There is still ignorance and prejudice. There are still orphaned children, grieving friends and loved ones mourning this overwhelming loss of life. On the occasion of World AIDS Day 2011, I remind all Canadians that as members of the human race, it is our obligation to persevere in finding a cure and care for those who are afflicted with this desease.
David Johnston
