Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of Canada Book Day
OTTAWA—One of the cornerstones of any education system is literacy. It forms the very basis of a smart nation.
In spite of new technologies, I believe that books continue to be wonderful communication tools, vessels that carry us on great adventures without ever having to leave the comfort of home. For centuries, books have forged ties between generations, cultures and civilizations. They give us the freedom to further our knowledge as we wish and to give meaning to universes limited only by our imaginations.
Reading is such an important part of the daily lives of so many Canadians. I myself am an avid reader and champion of literature. It is by no means a coincidence that my grandchildren call me ‘Grandpa Book’; I often have a book in hand and gain tremendous pleasure from discovering with them what each turn of the page might reveal.
I invite all those who share my love of reading to make the most of Canada Book Day to convey their passion to their fellow citizens, particularly our youth, whose thirst for knowledge can never be quenched.
David Johnston
