Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of Black History Month

February 1, 2011

OTTAWA - Each February, we celebrate Black History Month to enrich our understanding of the experiences, contributions and culture of Canadians of African ancestry.

African-Canadians have been an essential part of our heritage since the time of Mathieu Da Costa, an interpreter of African descent who joined one of Samuel de Champlain’s expeditions to Canada in the early 17th century. As history tells us, African-Canadians have demonstrated time and again remarkable ingenuity, ability and generosity. Many of our nation’s most cherished values find their strongest supporters and champions in members of the Black community. Today, Canada is better off thanks to their contributions to the social, cultural, economic and political life of our country.

Canada is arguably one of the most diverse countries in the world, and we are fortunate to live in an inclusive society. Let us take this opportunity to renew our commitment to addressing the causes and effects of racism, and to deepen our knowledge of African-Canadian history.

David Johnston
