Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, in memory of Canadian Victims in Haiti
OTTAWA—I would again like to offer my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the Canadians who died as a result of the earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010.
I respectfully honour you, the daughters and sons, mothers and fathers, brothers, sisters and friends who are preserving the memory of your loved ones. I know how much pain you are suffering with the great loss of those who distinguished themselves by their commitment and their willingness to help a population already weakened by so many other difficulties.
With their talent, their availability and their compassion—with no dreams of glory—they worked for the most part to reconcile helplessness and willingness to act, so that hope could triumph over distress, so that life could reclaim its rights. They proposed solutions and defended innovative ideas for a great many women, men and children.
May you find the strength to overcome your grief and the courage to turn your sorrow into projects for the future. May your loyalty to the memory of the people you lost comfort you and bring you peace and confidence.
Michaëlle Jean
