OTTAWA—The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is a sad reminder of the massacre of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal, on December 6, 1989. Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones, who will forever mourn this tragic loss.

As we commemorate the lives of these women, we cannot help but think of all women, here in Canada and around the world, whose integrity, safety and ultimately whose lives are threatened or destroyed by the violence committed against them. Verbal or physical violence, on a daily basis or occasionally, senseless, harassing, unacceptable violence that weakens, wears down, shames and kills.

We must refuse to accept any action that demeans girls and women. We must condemn such actions unequivocally. We must break the silence and find the courage to seek help. And that help is often close at hand, particularly in Canada, where efforts to raise awareness are making a real difference. We must recognize the remarkable work of so many organizations, shelters, resources and specialized services that are dedicated to helping women and their children in crisis. To say nothing of those working with individuals who are prone to violence and who have accepted the help offered to them. We must also commend the parents, friends, neighbours, volunteers and all those who, across our country, stand behind and help the victims, rather than turn a blind eye.

We can take comfort in knowing that there is a way out. The biggest step was conquering indifference, and in so doing, we have changed the way people think. We must keep up the fight.

Michaëlle Jean
