Medal of Bravery
On August 10, 1996, in Whistler, British Columbia, Steve Kloepzig went to the rescue of a boy whose sister, Melanie Vanderbeken, drowned while attempting to save him. Fourteen-year-old Melanie was picnicking at the beach with her family when she realized her younger brother had fallen into a sink hole and been swept into strong current, 25 meters from shore. Although a weak swimmer, she immediately swam to him and repeatedly pushed him up to keep him afloat. Despite her valiant efforts, Melanìe was unable to fight exhaustion and disappeared under the surface. Meanwhile, Mr. Kloepzig had also reached the boy. Fighting the turbulent waters, he towed the young victim back towards shore and passed him to boaters who arrived to lend a hand. Melanie's body was recovered three days later.
