Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, was honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands and Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven to Rideau Hall.
The Dutch royal family fled the Netherlands during the Nazi invasion of 1940 and accepted an invitation to come to Canada. Crown Princess Juliana and her daughters, Beatrix and Irene, actually lived in Ottawa from 1940 to 1945. A third daughter, Margriet, was born at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1943.
As a thank you, the Dutch royal family has sent hundreds of thousands of tulip bulbs to Ottawa over the years, which led to the creation of the annual Canadian Tulip Festival in 1953.
