Message from the Governor General of Canada
on the Occasion of the Journée internationale de la Francophonie
OTTAWA—Millions of people around the world are united by the French language, in which can be found a multitude of wonderful cultures and accents. The Journée internationale de la Francophonie is an opportunity for all of these people to come together, in the richness of diversity, to celebrate a dynamic and colourful language.
Whether co-operating on matters of sustainable development, defending education or promoting peace, La Francophonie extends to and brings together five continents. We are fortunate in Canada to be a part of that and to proudly uphold the values, missions and ideals at its core.
In honour of this day, my predecessor, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, who now serves as secretary-general of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, is launching an appeal to Francophone youth the world over, challenging them to take part in the “J’ai à cœur ma planète” [I care about my planet] campaign.
I invite all of you to take part in this initiative, which is mobilizing young people to find solutions for sustainable development. Countering the effects of climate change and making our world greener are among the major challenges that we are facing today.
May this day of celebration continue to promote La Francophonie worldwide!
