Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of International Volunteer Day

OTTAWA—On the occasion of International Volunteer Day, I would like to highlight the spirit of caring and giving that inspires all those who give of their time, talents and knowledge to help so many in need.

There are far too many people who find themselves in difficult situations, and volunteers are responding in increasingly effective and innovative ways. In Canada and throughout the world, volunteering is a time-honoured tradition that enhances society through the remarkable devotion of so many volunteers, to whom our country expresses its immense gratitude.

I call on all Canadians to find their own giving moments and to make a difference, be it big or little, in our communities and in the world. I hope you will be inspired by this 12th anniversary of the proclamation of the International Year of Volunteers by the United Nations, so that Canada can become a more giving and caring society.

David Johnston
