Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, on the occasion of the Canadian Navy Centennial

May 4, 2010

The Canadian Navy is proudly celebrating its centennial under the theme “Commemorate, Celebrate, Commit.” I am pleased to honour our men and women who have faithfully served Canada, true to the motto, Ready Aye Ready.

For 100 years, our sailors have taken part in missions on all seas, sometimes at great sacrifice, to defend the fundamental values Canadians hold so dear. I have had many opportunities during my mandate to witness the breadth and scope of their accomplishments. The presence of the Canadian Navy has undeniably changed the lives of millions of individuals throughout the world—be it in Europe, Asia or more recently in Haiti—and has kept the world’s oceans safe.

The Canadian Navy’s sterling reputation is recognized worldwide, as is that of the women and men who serve in it, always under the watchwords of courage, professionalism and honour. We can be proud of the noble institution the Navy has become, supporting Canada in its role within the international community.

On this most auspicious occasion, I am delighted to have the privilege, as commander-in-chief, to thank all our sailors, past and present, who brave the seas every day, faithful to their sacred commitment. I also want to thank their families and loved ones, who have stood shoulder to shoulder with them, in good times and bad. Fair winds and following seas to you all.

                                                                         Michaëlle Jean
