Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of the 65thanniversary of the Liberation of Netherlands

OTTAWA—The arrival of spring in Ottawa brings the blossoming of tulips—not only a beautiful sight, but also a meaningful one. Each tulip is a reminder of our close and everlasting ties with the Netherlands, one that was cemented 65 years ago with the liberation of that country at the end of the
Second World War.

The bravery, courage and dedication of our Canadian Forces, fighting for the ideals and values we hold so dear, were instrumental in delivering freedom to the Dutch. That year, we wrote a key chapter in Canada’s military history. Since then, we have been seen by the world as a friend and champion of human rights. And we have always remembered those who sacrificed to make all of this possible.

I am proud when I hear of the youth who made a pilgrimage to the Netherlands to participate in the ceremonies and to walk in the footsteps of our soldiers. I am humbled when I see the veterans who travelled overseas to once again experience the people and land that they liberated
65 years ago. And when one group speaks to another, we ensure that history lives on and that the pride we felt then will never diminish.

On this anniversary, I extend my very best wishes to our friends in the Netherlands and to our soldiers, past and present, who represent Canada with distinction and honour.
