Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of National Volunteer Week

OTTAWA— National Volunteer Week, which is taking place this year from April 18 to April 24, reminds us how the active participation of hundreds of thousands of volunteers in our communities make a difference in the lives of millions of Canadians.

This week is also an opportunity to reflect on what we can all do to break down solitudes, improve the lives of others and provide glimmers of hope, without expecting anything in return. For those going through difficult moments in their lives, a sympathetic ear, a reassuring presence and some positive energy can be invaluable sources of encouragement.

I would like to sincerely thank all those who care about their fellow citizens and contribute to the well being of our communities so selflessly.

Michaëlle Jean
