Canada’s history has been shaped by the fruitful encounters of different civilizations and peoples. From these dynamic encounters sprang a unique culture and history, in which diversity became the very essence of the Canadian people, something we proudly celebrate.
Yet this co-existence did not happen overnight. We had to learn to live together, to overcome obstacles—and it was not easy. We discovered that it is impossible to build a nation on division or hatred, and that unity can only emerge once diversity is recognized and embraced.
During my trips throughout our beautiful country and abroad, I have always had the good fortune of meeting with committed women, men and young people who long for a society that is free from prejudice, free from racial discrimination, and free from exclusion, one where the spirit of compassion, solidarity and openness prevails.
On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, I encourage and applaud the unwavering efforts of all those who are working to build an inclusive society in which each person can achieve his or her full potential and live in respect and harmony.
