UKRAINE - Act of Commemoration at the Holodomor Memorial Monument

Their Excellencies with President Yushchenko and Mrs. Yushchenko laid a bowl of wheat at the Holodomor Memorial Monument in honour of the millions of Ukrainians who died of starvation during the Soviet famine of 1932-1933.

The Holodomor is considered one of the greatest catastrophes to affect the Ukrainian nation. An estimated 2.2 million to 10 million people died within Soviet Ukraine. In March 2008, the parliament of Ukraine and many governments of other countries, including Canada, recognized the actions of the Soviet government as an act of genocide.
