Message from the Governor General of Canada
on the Occasion of National Volunteer Week

OTTAWA— From the outset of my mandate as governor general, I have had the pleasure and great privilege of having access to an extraordinary platform from which to promote the culture of giving and to honour remarkable volunteers, right across this country.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, I am delighted to be hosting a conference on giving entitled Working Together for the Common Good, which will be held at Rideau Hall on April 27. This conference will help us to identify tangible ways of increasing giving behaviour, to better understand what it means to give today and to develop a national approach to encourage giving.

Giving of ourselves speaks volumes about the way we imagine our communities and our nation. Let us continue to strengthen the fabric of our society by giving of our time, resources and talents within our communities. Through our individual and joint efforts, we will build a smarter and more caring Canada.

My warmest thanks to all those dedicated to causes that contribute to our collective well-being. I wish you all a wonderful week.

David Johnston
