Message from the Governor General of Canada
on the Occasion of Remembrance Day

OTTAWA—Each year on Remembrance Day, Canadians gather in cemeteries and at war memorials from coast to coast to coast.

As the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month approaches, we stand together in solemn silence.

November 11 is an opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifices of veterans, and to remember the suffering of all who have been killed, disabled, widowed or orphaned in war and conflict.

Serving others is never easy, particularly for those who serve in uniform. These women and men risk their lives every day for ideals that we sometimes take for granted.

But some things are worth the risk.

Our freedoms are worth struggling for.

Peace is worth striving for.

Family and community are worth sacrificing for.

The human cost, however, can be enormous.

Today is a day to remember those who fell and were wounded in the line of duty while serving abroad as well as here on home soil.

To our Canadian Armed Forces veterans, who have given their all to defend our country in war and to maintain peace over the years, I am deeply grateful.

As commander-in-chief of Canada, I’ve had the honour of commemorating some important milestones in our history during the past year.

Anniversaries marking the Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Atlantic and the end of the Second World War are all significant dates on our calendar.

It’s so important that we as Canadians take the time to learn about the conflicts of the past. Doing so reminds us of the bravery and sacrifices of veterans, and better equips us to create a more peaceful future.

By remembering and understanding our history, we can help bring about a more fair and just world.

This Remembrance Day, let us commit to better understanding our military history and its important consequences for Canada and for the world.

And to all those who have served in our defence, I once again offer my sincere thanks.
