I’m pleased to welcome you to Rideau Hall, home of the people of Canada. I hope that you will also consider this your home away from home.

Both of you are joining a proud diplomatic community in Canada, one that is focused on reinforcing our good relations. I’ve been fortunate as governor general to have travelled widely, to promote Canada on the world stage. I’m also delighted to welcome the world to Canada, to show off our corner of the globe.

You are here to represent your countries, to find new opportunities for dialogue and to discover ways in which we can partner to the benefit of our peoples.

And as you learn about Canada, so, too, will I learn about your countries. A wonderful reciprocity!

Ambassador Dimovski, there is a flourishing Macedonian community in Canada, one that is eager to engage with you in your new role. I understand this is your first appointment abroad, and I hope you will find Canada a wonderful place to meet with people from all walks of life.

Our two countries enjoy a number of partnerships, particularly in business and military training. Yet, there is still so much more that we can do together. Collaboration between countries is key to developing closer and more productive relationships. I look forward to discussing ways to enhance our co-operation in multiple spheres.

Ambassador Monji, you are already very familiar with Canada, having worked with us and visited our country on several occasions. Given your experience, I fully expect that we will be able to find new ways to work together, particularly in the sharing of knowledge.

Canada and Japan enjoy a solid friendship based on shared values. Japan is Canada’s fourth largest merchandise trading partner, and our educational institutions boast over 200 agreements, as well as many student exchanges. We will continue to broaden our relationship in the coming years, particularly through our people-to-people links. I wish you the very best in bringing our two countries even closer together.

Diplomacy and dialogue are vital parts of building future success for our peoples. Both of you will forge stronger friendships between our nations, sharing culture, knowledge and prosperity.
