One thing I’ve noticed as governor general is how generous Canadians are. There’s truly a wave of giving stretching from coast to coast to coast.

The volunteers of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa are making their own waves. I can’t help but be swept up by your enthusiasm.

When we give, it causes a ripple effect, impacting not only those we help, but also those who are looking for a way to give. In other words, giving leads to more giving.

That’s why it’s important to share your stories, and why it’s important to celebrate your generosity. That’s what we’re doing here today.

As patron of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, I’m delighted to join you in celebrating its volunteers. This is particularly meaningful during National Volunteer Week.

All of you have made an impact with your giving, although “impact” is not a strong enough word. Your work has changed a young person’s life for the better. You have helped transform their lives. You make their days brighter, their adolescence a little less confusing. You help them find their path.

You are mentors to those who need a friend; guiding lights to our youth during their formative years.

It’s a vital role, one that you’ve embraced fully. And today, you honour those who have given so much to this organization, to youth, to the community and to our country.

I’m so inspired by the example you set. I’m inspired by what you’ve done, how you have devoted time and talent to help young people.

To all the volunteers here today, I would like to thank you for your efforts.
