Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada, following the death of the Honourable Jim Flaherty
OTTAWA—My wife, Sharon, and I were deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Jim Flaherty today.
A three-time member of Parliament and Canada’s finance minister for more than eight years, Mr. Flaherty dedicated himself to serving Canadians in one of government’s most demanding roles. That he did so during challenging economic times makes his achievement all the more impressive. Mr. Flaherty also served as minister responsible for the Greater Toronto Area and, earlier in his career, as a member of Ontario’s provincial legislature. Without a doubt, his passion for public service and his commitment to Canada were extraordinary.
Mr. Flaherty will be missed by all who knew him, myself and Sharon included. On behalf of all Canadians, we offer our deepest condolences to his wife Christine, and to their three sons, John, Galen and Quinn.
David Johnston
