Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of the
Journée internationale de la Francophonie

OTTAWA—I am delighted to be celebrating the Journée internationale de la Francophonie.

From the outset of my mandate as governor general, my wife, Sharon, and I have been encouraging Canadians to answer the call to service by giving of their talents and energy in building a smarter, more caring society and world. I believe that the many objectives of the International Organisation of La Francophonie are helping to make that vision a reality each and every day.

There are strong bonds that connect the member countries of La Francophonie. Of course, there is the language of Molière, one of our greatest treasures; our commitment to promoting cultural and linguistic diversity; but above all, there is our respect for the shared values of peace, democracy and human rights that have solidified the belonging of each nation in La Francophonie.

On this day of celebration, I invite all of my fellow citizens to come together, take part in the activities, and embrace the unique fellowship that unites us within the Francophone world. I wish you all a wonderful Journée internationale de la Francophonie.

David Johnston
