Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of International Women’s Day

OTTAWA— My wife, Sharon, my daughters and I are delighted to be celebrating International Women’s Day, proclaimed as such by the United Nations.

In recent decades, society has made tremendous strides in a number of areas with respect to the status of women. However, in this so-called modern era, we must continue to do everything possible to ensure equality for all women in all aspects of their lives. The struggle for equality is not solely the responsibility of the women of this country; it falls to each and every one of us for whom respect for human rights is fundamental and inalienable. While it is clear that there remains much to be done, the future is nonetheless full of promise.

So let us take this opportunity to celebrate the victories that have been achieved in gender equality through the full participation of women in society. I wish you a most enjoyable day.

 David Johnston
