Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of the International Day for the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination

OTTAWA— Canadians are fortunate to live in a multicultural society, where diversity is both a source of great strength and the foundation of our national identity. And yet, as those who endure the indignity of discrimination well know, fear and prejudice never rest, and no society is free of racism.

Knowing this, I urge all Canadians to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by reaffirming our commitment to fairness and diversity. From its very beginnings, Canada has been an experiment in partnership between dissimilar peoples, and Canadians have developed a remarkable ability to bridge and respect differences. That our experiment remains a work-in-progress is no cause for despair; rather, it is reason to renew our dedication to building a tolerant, respectful society.

I have been privileged during the past year to undertake international visits to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and I can confirm that many people around the world look to Canada as a beacon of diversity. Together, we have a wonderful opportunity to inspire hope, and a responsibility to strive for a world in which all human beings are free and equal in dignity and rights.

Racial discrimination has no place in our lives. Let us work together on this and every day to end it.

David Johnston
