Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 

OTTAWA—In 1989, Canada was one of the first countries to launch an annual campaign against racial discrimination. Today, from coast to coast to coast, we live in a wonderfully rich society that reflects every facet of the human race. I am proud of this diversity, which serves as a model and source of inspiration for all nations aspiring to greater solidarity and tolerance. 

The success of our multiculturalism speaks to our ability to live in harmony, regardless of our origin, ethnicity or religion. However, not so very long ago, true equality for all seemed beyond our grasp, and Canada’s own history has been marked by tragic events during which many people were subject to ignorance and discrimination. Although our society has progressed since the sombre period of slavery and segregation, there remains more to be done. 

We are fortunate to live in a country that upholds the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. While this privilege brings with it certain responsibilities, I have no doubt that by furthering our efforts and working together, we will be able to build a smarter, more caring world. 

On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, I encourage all Canadians to come together, to imagine solutions and to take action to put an end to racism and discrimination in all their forms.
