Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, Following the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

OTTAWA—My wife, Sharon, and I were shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck parts of Japan today.

On behalf of all Canadians, we would like to offer sincere condolences to those who are suffering in the wake of this catastrophe. The enormity of the disaster and the images of destruction that have followed are truly humbling, underscoring our fragility as human beings and the importance of our solidarity as peoples.

We also extend our sympathies to all Canadians of Japanese descent, as well as to the thousands of Canadians who are living in Japan at this difficult time.

The Japanese people are known for their sense of giving and legendary spirit of volunteerism. These values, as well as their strength, compassion and ingenuity, will carry them through this catastrophe.

We wish them the very best in their efforts to rescue the wounded and to rebuild their lives.

Rest assured our thoughts are with you.

David Johnston
