Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of Citizenship Week 2011

OTTAWA— It gives me great pleasure to recognize Citizenship Week 2011.

For me, respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law are the very foundations of Canadian identity. I believe that being Canadian is an immense privilege that we should all celebrate.

During the first year of my mandate as governor general, I had the pleasure of discovering the many facets of several communities, right across this country. I had the opportunity to meet with many of our fellow citizens from diverse backgrounds and to glimpse the richness to be found in our multiculturalism. I am always filled with tremendous pride whenever I see the unity through diversity that makes up the mosaic of our communities.

Whether fleeing injustice, pursuing their dreams or simply beginning a new chapter in their lives, millions of Canadians from every continent have crossed oceans and continents to make Canada their home. Today, they are helping to weave the fabric of our country in keeping with the values of our extended Canadian family. Together, with our differences and similarities, we are living in harmony.

During Citizenship Week, I invite all Canadians to reflect on what Canadian citizenship means to them and on the rights and responsibilities that go with it. I wish everyone a wonderful week.
