Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11
OTTAWA—On September 11, 2001, our neighbours to the south experienced one of the worst acts of terrorism perpetrated on American soil. Every year since then, on this date forevermore burned into our collective memory, Canada remembers those who perished in that terrible tragedy.
It is often in times of crisis that we push beyond our limits and bravery comes to the forefront.
Already ten years have passed since that day, when thousands of men and women demonstrated exceptional kindness and courage in the face of imminent danger. All those who gave of their time and of themselves by putting their talents and know-how to use helping others in need deserve our greatest esteem and utmost respect.
At the time, I witnessed the incredible generosity of Canadians and all those who worked together to help the American people. And today, countless individuals are devising and undertaking initiatives to benefit those whose lives were affected by the attacks. Those events turned the world as we knew it upside down, but the extraordinary courage shown by the rescue workers as they tried to save lives, despite the threat, will forever remain a source of inspiration.
I would like to pay tribute to the innocent victims whose lives were cut short as a result of this senseless attack. My thoughts go out to their families and loved ones, who relive the anguish every year on this tragic date. Sharon and I offer to them our profound sympathy as we mark the 10th anniversary of this dark day in our history.
David Johnston
