Letter from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the engagement of His Royal Highness Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton

OTTAWA— The following is the text of the letter sent to His Royal Highness Prince William on the day of his engagement to Miss Catherine Middleton.

“As Her Majesty’s representative in Canada, I was delighted to learn of Your Royal Highness’s engagement to Miss Catherine Middleton. On this special day, may you know that Canadians share in your happiness as you begin to make plans for your life together.

Over the past year, Canadians have had numerous opportunities to express their loyalty and affection for members of the Royal Family. The visit to Canada, late last year, of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and the Royal Tour across Canada by Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh this past summer were wonderful opportunities for revitalizing our links with the Crown. This most auspicious occasion of your engagement provides Canadians with yet another opportunity for rejoicing.

My wife Sharon and I are delighted to extend our warmest congratulations to you and Miss Catherine Middleton as you prepare for your forthcoming marriage.  May it be a long and happy one!”

David Johnston
