Reception at the Vorres Museum
Athens, Greece, Wednesday, October 28, 2009
I am delighted to be here with you this evening, in this place where tradition and modernity come together seamlessly in such perfect harmony.
The poet Yannis Ritsos said that in Greece, “[translation] roots travel beneath the stones.”
To this I would gladly add that the remarkable work of Mr. Vorres reminds us that from those roots, which continue to thrive, spring promises of renewal.
We could not have hoped for a more extraordinary place, which brings together the vestiges of folk traditions, the beauty of gardens that beckon us to lose ourselves for eternity, and the powerful creative voices of contemporary artists.
This place is proof that Greece has continued its voyage since its glorious days of Antiquity.
My husband, His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond, our delegation and I are enchanted by this place, and by this opportunity to celebrate the depth and warmth of the ties that bind Canada and Greece.
We are especially moved to do so in a place of culture, because we believe that culture conveys our values and, particularly in these uncertain times, serves as a vital link between the peoples of the world.
That is why it is so important in Canada that we do not consider culture a commodity like any other, and why we believe we all must ensure that, wherever we are in the world, everyone is able to give culture its rightful place in which to thrive.
In this regard, Greece, which is one of the first great European cultures, from which we have inherited our democratic values, is a source of inspiration.
Look around.
We are surrounded by works that amaze us, question us, challenge us; works that, while imbued with history and mythology, are in tune with today’s world.
Because their creators are limited only by their imaginations and are not afraid to open themselves to the winds of creativity.
These artists, brought together in this place, just as we are—how fortunate for us!—invite us to share in that daring and to celebrate life in all its forms and dimensions.
For that reason alone, and that is reason enough, artists are essential to our lives.
For that reason alone, and that is reason enough, we thank them.
It is in that same spirit of recognition that we will be honouring the contribution of some of the people who are committed to strengthening the relations between Canada and Greece.
But before we get into that, let me say that tonight will be another memory of Greece that we will cherish in our hearts and in our minds.
On behalf of the unbreakable friendship between Canada and Greece, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for welcoming us so warmly.
