December 10, 2008, marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which opens with the assertion that “recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.”

Canada is very proud to have played a role in creating and adopting this “Magna Carta of humanity,” through the efforts of Professor John Humphrey of McGill University.

Though the world has changed since 1948 and democracy has made tremendous strides, there are still far too many women, men and children whose most basic rights are violated every day and who continue to face the most appalling contempt.

We must use every means possible to strengthen respect for human rights and the role of institutions that support them. Let us remain vigilant and work together tirelessly to a build a world that rests on a foundation of human solidarity.

Michaëlle Jean
