My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I are deeply saddened by the death of Major Luc Racine. A member of the Embassy of Canada in Mali, Major Racine was serving with the Military Training Assistance Program (MTAP) at the Peacekeeping School in Bamako.
Canada has lost a member of its military family, whose distinguished career was characterized by difficult and significant missions. In particular, he served as part of the United Nations mission during the genocide in Rwanda. Deeply moved by this experience, he set out to share his knowledge with supporters of peace around the world.
On behalf of all Canadians, we extend our condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues with the Royal 22e Régiment, embassy staff, and all those whose lives were touched by this courageous soldier.
