Hilda Wilson, Shelburne, Ontario (posthumous)
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Hilda Wilson was an inspiration to her family, generously giving her time to members of her community. She often picked up elderly friends from neighbouring towns to drive them to doctors' appointments, help them with their shopping, or just to take them out for a drive. For three years, Mrs. Wilson opened her home to an acquaintance of the family, an elderly veteran who lived alone and whose family lived in another country. She cared for him until he moved to the local nursing home, and continued to visit him every day until he died. She also provided support to an elderly woman, visiting, cleaning house, preparing meals and providing transportation, permitting her to live independently in her own home. Mrs. Wilson was always there when anyone needed support.
