Lesia Maruschak is a volunteer with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC). She has organized fundraisers and promoted awareness walks, and has spoken on behalf of the LLSC about her personal challenges with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. She convinced retailers to donate a portion of their profits to the LLSC, and inspired international students visiting Canada to continue their engagement once they return home. She also put together an online newsletter that features personal stories, tips on nutrition, recipes and recommendations on how to stay positive during treatment. In March 2013, she founded CURE: blood cancer.
