Sibyl E. Whalley, Calgary, Alberta
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Over the past 14 years, Sibyl Whalley has walked eight kilometres every day to collect pop cans and bottles from staff and patrons of local businesses. Her efforts have raised some $60,000 for a variety of charities in her community, including the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter, Interfaith Food and Clothing, the Foothills Medical Centre and the Salvation Army, among others. Mrs. Whalley has also helped countless immigrants and elderly people to acquire new skills by voluntarily teaching them the hairdressing trade. She is a mentor to school children and teaches them the importance and value of volunteering and reaching out in small ways. Wherever she goes, this warm and compassionate woman dispenses goodwill and support to the people she meets.
