For her efforts to advance maternal health, notably through the creation of an academic program based in Uganda that promotes safe motherhood.
Jean Chamberlain-Froese is committed to improving maternal health in developing countries. She is an obstetrician and associate professor at McMaster University, and is an outspoken champion of system-wide approaches to reduce death associated with pregnancy or childbirth in poor countries. To that end, she founded Save the Mothers, an organization headquartered in sub-Saharan Africa that administers the world’s first master’s degree in public health focused on maternal mortality. Under her leadership, the program has produced graduates with the knowledge and training to effect change in their communities.
