Former Principal of the Royal Conservatory of Music and Professor Emeritus of the University of Toronto, he has had a major influence on music in Canada. He co-founded and was first General Director of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. His publications on Sir Ernest MacMillan and the Canadian Opera Company are considered to be definitive works. A distinguished juror and consultant, for the past fifty years, he has been a constant source of knowledge, advice and encouragement for young musicians, promoting Canadian musical talent.
