With the help of a ukulele, Chalmers Doane taught thousands of children to play an instrument and experience the joy of music. As a music supervisor in Halifax schools in the 1960s, he introduced this novel approach to education, resulting in an exponential increase in the numbers of students interested in band, string and choral music. His innovative pedagogy has been a model to school boards across the country. He has also founded bands and orchestras in the community and served as a director with Symphony Nova Scotia and the Neptune Theatre. This accomplished musician currently makes music with the jazz-inspired Chalmers Doane Trio, playing the piano, clarinet and fiddle, as well as the ukulele.
