Deeply committed to the provision of first-class health care, he has had a profound impact upon the Canadian medical profession. As a Professor and Associate Dean at Queen's University, he has achieved international distinction as a scientist, clinician, educator and scholar. His work with the Medical Research Council is legendary and he has served as President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, which he guided through a period of rapid change.
