Officer of the Order of Canada
- Awarded on: October 21, 1998
- Invested on: April 14, 1999
As the first woman to hold the position of Canadian permanent representative to the United Nations, she has demonstrated talent and diplomacy in all circumstances. As both an Assistant Deputy Minister and Canadian representative at the G7, she was highly regarded by all her colleagues for her tremendous determination and human qualities. She then accepted a new challenge, taking up the position of Deputy Minister at the Department of National Defence for a few years before being appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. She is, without question, a model of integrity and dedication.
