He is highly regarded as one of the pioneers of the Canadian aerospace industry. In the 1950s he designed flight simulators for the Avro Arrow. In more recent times, he was a Systems Manager with the Canadarm project. Following his appointment as Director General of the Canadian Astronaut Program, he supervised the missions of the first Canadian astronauts aboard the space shuttle. The television images from these missions drew attention to Canada's developing role as a leading partner in space research.
