A leading intellectual and respected figure in Central Europe, Vaclav Havel has exemplified the principles that Canadians hold in the highest regard. His unwavering belief in democratic ideals has been conveyed in his plays and essays that attracted international attention to the Czechoslovakian struggle. In addition, his advocacy of peaceful resistance and his perseverance were inspirational. The first president of the independent Czech Republic, he oversaw the preparations made for his country's integration into both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He also promoted respect for human rights and the importance of international dialogue on the world stage.
