Professor emeritus of the University of Manitoba and founder of its Slavic studies department, he has more than two thousand scholarly publications to his credit, including his major work, An Etymological Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language. In addition, he is highly regarded for his pioneer studies in Ukrainian Canadian folklore and his valuable archival collection of materials related to Canada's cultural history.
