Birks professor of metallurgy at McGill University, he is internationally renowned for having introduced a method of controlled rolling in the manufacture of steel sheeting. This has produced a stronger metal for use in constructing such heavy equipment as oil pipelines, rigs and platforms. He was the first Canadian to be awarded a gold medal by France's prestigious Société française de métallurgie et de matériaux.
