National Archivist and Assistant History Professor at the University of Ottawa since 1985, he is renowned for his contribution to Canadian historiography and to the progress of work on the comparative history of Western France and Quebec. He is a member of various scholarly associations and author of many publications, especially on French-Canadian society and its economy between 1760 and 1850. In addition he is recognized for his contribution to technical and scientific co-operation between Canada and France.
